GEOFF DUGMORE REVIEWS THE CARRERA TERRIER SNARE
London-Based Global Session Ace Meets a Wicked Little Doggy
He's one of the UK's top session drummers as well as being a busy songwriter and producer. But with over 50 #1 hits around the world and credits including Tina Turner, Rod Stewart, Dido, Robbie Williams, Jimmy Page and hundreds more, Geoff Dugmore has an in-depth perspective on drums and drum sounds. Though he endorses a major American drum brand (think about a workshop on the West Coast....), Geoff was kind enough to give one of our wicked Terriers some stick in the studio and give us his verdict.
"My first response was, `Okay, it looks nice. But being only 13" x 3.85" I figured it would be a one-sound-only drum. Well, what a surprise I got! What struck me first was how smooth the snare throw was. I was doing a song that required me to flip the snares on and off, and there was absolutely no squeak or rattle, which was fantastic considering how sensitive studio mics are. Next I tuned it down. Usually snares that small and thin sound great when tuned high, but again to my surprise it sounded really great, with nice fat and consistently even tones when drop-tuned. Then I swapped its Evans batter for a Remo CS. I'm not sure if that made any real difference, but still, the sound was great. I'm a solid hitter live, but in the studio I tend not to play rim shots and, because I want to get as much tone as possible, I play more softly. But even then the sound was very even and nice and round on every stroke. Plus I could tune up or down and easily get great sounds.
"All in all, the Terrier is a far more versatile snare drum than I would even have imagined. I can't wait to try it live, because the `bark' and the `bite' of this wicked little doggy will really give the band and the soundman something to talk about."
