Creating our shells

We believe the time and care taken to create your new hand-made custom drum will deliver the sound you have been looking for

It all starts with the shell

Each shell is made by hand in our workshop, using the finest birch, to the individual requirements of our customers.

After selecting matched pieces of timber, we accurately measure and cut each piece and mould your individual shells, allowing them to dry fully before commencing with the next stage.

Your shells are then inspected and, if they pass our initial quality control, go on to be sanded in readiness for the application of one of the many hand-applied finishes we have to offer.

Once the finish has dried completely, normally 7 to 14 days, the bearing edges and, if it is to become a snare drum, snare beds are carefully cut. After more sanding to make sure all is smooth and level, a wax is applied to seal the end grain of the wood and ensure the head seats evenly.

The drum is drilled using our 3-stage drilling technique, which makes a snug fit for the hardware that you have selected.

Once the hardware is fitted the drums are given a full check over and then heads are put on and tuned to different degrees of pitch to check and test the voice of the drum.
